Uni Environment carries out basic and applied research in the field of environmental monitoring, and are involved in contract research for private companies and public authorities.
Our vision is to develop and deliver scientifically based knowledge for ecologically sound development. The department has research activities within 7 key areas.
Fresh water biology and inland fisheries (LFI)
research, monitoring and evaluations in fresh water ecosystems with main focus on salmonids (Atlantic salmon, inland trout, brook trout) and freshwater benthos.
Marine environmental research
applied studies and monitoring of coastal and offshore marine environment based on expertise in various field sampling techniques, laboratory investigations and data analysis.
Integrative Fish Biology
basic and applied research with focus on fish health, smolt quality, production of juveniles and grown fish.
Molecular ecology 
development of molecular techniques for determination of biodiversity, trophic interactions and status of marine ecosystems.
Marine and molecular biology
development of new biologic markers for integrated environmental monitoring.
Cultural landscape
research with focus on the human – landscape interaction, processes of change in past and present and their effects on landscapes, ecosystems and biodiversity.
